Hello, my name is Mercedes, and I am excited to join the Marvelous Minds team!

I was adopted from Peru at age three and grew up in the city of Chicago. I earned a bachelor’s degree in art from Beloit College and spent a semester abroad, studying art in Florence, Italy. After college, I worked with adolescents and young adults at the Boys & Girls Clubs in Wisconsin and on a Native American reservation in Northern Minnesota. Witnessing the high rates of depression, anxiety, substance misuse and other destructive behaviors among the adolescents and young adults I worked with convinced me that I wanted to pursue a Master’s degree in Social Work.

At Jane Addams College of Social Work at UIC I specialized in working with children and families.  I gained clinical and middle school counseling experience in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) conducting initial assessments (anxiety, depression, ADHD, behavioral issues), one on one therapy, and group therapy sessions.

My goal at Marvelous Minds is to provide my clients with a safe environment where they can be themselves, explore their interests, and determine goals. Together we will identify and work to remove obstacles, while engaging their strengths and assets to reach their goals. I will use a variety of therapeutic techniques including, but not limited to, Active Listening, Task Centered Practice (TCP), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Play therapy and Art exercises.

I look forward to working with you!
